Nostalgia has me soon:?I’ve been contemplating a lot about some of my all-time favorite MMORPG?characters, some of who I can’t bodily play anymore because they no longer exist, and many of whom have been substantially altered inside their activities so as to make them virtually unrecognizable to me now. Ergo, it’azines time to inflict that on all of you way too!

What is your one single favs MMORPG character type of all time? Which game was it, how that work, and the reason why was it the very best class? I posed these questions to the Hugely OP writers with this week’s indulgent Massively Overthinking.

?Claire Ross (@dengarsw):?I have fonder memories involving self selected skills, but if I have to go with a class (and one that will wasn’t fun because it was utterly broken), I’m going to give you a tie to Asheron’ohydrates Call 2’s?Tactician and Bounty Hunter. The game was usually quite unique and inventive, but these two lessons were really interesting. The actual Tactician set up powerful, non-mobile dog “turrets” with different ammo kinds and had a mend skill. It also could possibly create walls that lasted a little while. As the game had crash detection, the use of wall space really helped present players new strategies even when the tactician couldn’big t use their main pet.

The Bounty Hunter, however, was random seeing that heck. It was a melee class with a varied attack or a pair of back before this was a thing in MMOs. It experienced the highest straight injury attack in the game, nevertheless you’d pull aggro away from any decent fish tank with it instantly. You possessed an awesome damage combination having you invasion the left part of the enemy, the right side, the back, plus the front. You had any “vigor” drain (think staying power + mana) that could just change people into nugatory goo in PvP. You had a death elimination buff that started out at 100% and each moment you would normally die, you’d lose 50% probability of it working (as well). Best, though, seemed to be that you had a buff that increased the chance at getting excellent loot, as all the loot in the game ended up being randomly stat made items. The class was squishy and besides and unreliable, but that also was most likely one of the things that managed to get so fun.

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): I can’t even hold myself to a single! And I asked the issue!?My favorite character?for you to roleplay isn’t even one of my top 10 instructional classes, so it’s nice how these wring out. My Earth/Storm City associated with Heroes Controller takes the most notable spot, I think. Darn, those particle results, and the raw power of that combo. I had a hundred alts, and she had been years off from being my first persona in CoH, but your woman was epic. Outside of that, I’d state my classic EverQuest Bard, Guild Wars Ritualist, and World of Warcraft Shaman circa WOTLK. I really sensed like those instructional classes were a joy to learn mechanically; they just felt satisfying and right, the level of class you think about while you’re playing your alts (or my principal, in the case of my EQ Bard, because she was the alt!).

And I know I didn’t make area in the question with regard to skill-based games, but the “disco archer” in Ultima Online has been a cherished favorite of quarry for over a decade. She’ohydrates got archery, bushido, and discordance (the bard skill) and their linked passives all jammed inside, and while she isn’to the most powerful character nowadays in this meta, she cleans upwards pretty much everything I at any time care to do in UO. I’d bet almost all of the UO screenshots we’ve ever applied to this site and Outdated Massively included the woman!

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog):?You know, there are so many classes that I’ng loved, and there are lots involving obvious ones… but I should give a nod to an old favorite in which couldn’t really work in any other game in the form of Final Fantasy XI’s Blue Mage.?Glowing blue Mages are fascinating since they have a whole minigame regarding them wherein you need to get hit by an enemy skill to know it, but you must also balance the cost of an art and the slots available to you before equipping it. Skills also experienced associated stat enhances, and the right combinations of skills would cause passive traits. It was complex as heck, but the result became a class that could turn out to be intensely versatile, which has a wide variety of options for taking on any given situation.

For more modern class design that’ohydrates focused more in balancing classes with each other for group articles, it doesn’t perform so well. But it would be a fun design, as well as I’d love to observe more developers alter the idea. It’s the long-time favorite, and the fact that this showed up in my preferred FFXI expansion doesn’t injured.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog):?Hm, I’ve acquired many favorite sessions over the years and most them all were pet-related. My Impression Controller from City involving Heroes gets a strong excited vote, and I surely had great times with Lord of the Bands Online’s Lore-master. However boring it will seem, I’m going to cite World of Warcraft’s Finder as one of my prime faves too. My partner and i loved the concept of taming your own companion then siccing a gorilla or bear on a foe even though shooting it with a backlash with a rifle.

MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, web site):?Single favorite? I actually don’t have a individual favorite! How could you probably ask me for you to choose… I knew you are actually evil. Properly, since I probably can’big t include classic Star Conflicts Galaxies — my Master Dancer/Master Person Handler/Master Entertainer/Medic/Musician would win without doubt — I will have to divide the vote between Fury in EverQuest II as well as the Disciple in Vanguard. Both are healers however with unique twists.

The Fury has every energy I have ever wanted explained into one package deal: lightning, fire, cures, invisibility, and shapeshifting. It possibly has a quick-travel portal capability, which I didn’t know I wanted! There are also rate, underwater breathing, along with other helpful buffs. Seriously, this class only doesn’t have a pet. Whenever I do think of my wish class, I snapshot a Fury.

Vanguard merged a monk with a healer to make a Disciple. I have constantly loved martial arts, as well as the moves are just gorgeous to watch, so presenting me the chance to produce those moves without having giving up my passion for healing was great. I also really valued how Disciples needed to be engaged in the action as a way to heal, so it wasn’t just a game of watching health bars.

Honorable refers to go to Vanguard’s Shaman healer (Phoenix transformation and pet ftw) and the Dread Dark night, a shadow magic/necromancer container (even though I never played it). Face it, Vanguard simply just had some of the all-time very best classes period!

Patron Archebius:?This is a tough one! I have a pretty strong accessory to Guild Wars 1, and so I’m tempted to claim my Warrior or even my Assassin – I needed a ton of fun using different builds because Warrior, whether destruction or tanking for Fissure or simply trying to run to Drok’s, and the assassin was simply cool. The animations, the armor, the particular moves… I really liked that class.

But ultimately, I do believe my favorite class of in history has to go to TERA’s Slayer. Could it have been just that it in shape my standard identity template – girl using a greatsword tends to be my go into default, for whatever reason. Maybe it was the particular skimpy armor; I’l not made of natural stone.

Mostly, though, I think it has been the fact that it received the potential, if played out well, to do stuff that no one at that amount should have been able to perform. I saw a male solo a Bang with it once, and i also came close to being able to do the same thing. It was a real radical departure by what I’d played before, pounding out the same set option sequences, that the thought of an MMO school being able to transcend stage and gear through great reflexes and smart tactics made me like it.

Your turn!
